18) This essay “A Child is Born” has been written by Germaine Greer. “A Child Is Born” is an extract from her book sex and destiny. She was born in 1939 in Australia. She is a famous feminist (स्त्री अधिकारवादी) writer of Australia. In this essay she talks about the ways of managing child birth in traditional societies.
19) She says that every woman goes to her husband’s house from her mother’s house after marriage to live with the husband. There is a concept (एक अवधारणा है) that such women do not become the members of her husband’s family until they have born a child. It is told that a girl is lucky who parents alive. She goes to her mother’s house for the last month of her pregnancy and about the first three months of the baby’s life.
24) When a child is of seven days old, the naming ceremony (नामकरण समारोह) is held. A new dress is brought(लाया) for child and also a new sari is brought for the mother. There is dancing and singing programme until late night. Garlands of turmeric and garlic are worn to the child (बच्चे को हल्दी और लहसुन की माला पहनाई जाती है) to protect from evil sprits (बुरी आत्माओं). After three months of delivery again she goes to her husband’s home and she becomes the family member.
