Class 12 English Chapter 10 India Through Traveller’s Eye
★ Summary of “India Through Traveller’s Eye”
India through a Traveller’s Eyes is an extract from my several worlds which is a personal record of her life. It shows her love for the poorest people living in Indian Villages.
In this chapter Pearl S. Buck has described her visit to India. She says India had always been part of the background of her lif. She had heard a lot more of India from her family doctor and his wife who were Indians. She had also learnt Buddhism and the life story of Lord Buddha (भगवान बुद्ध). The writer had come to India not to see The Taj Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri,or any historical places. Her mission was to see and listen to young intellectuals (बुद्धिजीवियों) of Indian cities and peasants (किसानों) in the villages. She found thousands of young intellectuals trained (प्रशिक्षित) in English schools were jobless in India.
The writer stayed (रुके) with an Indian family in a village. Indians had great rewards (पुरस्कार) for great men and great women. She found deep devotion (गहरी भक्ति) for Gandhiji among Indians. Indian people are religious minded. It had the best and worst both aspects.
Or
This is a very important essay of ‘Pearl S. Buck’. It shows Buck’s love for the poorest people of Indian villages and the unsatisfied youth of the cities
At first she describes the colour of the Indian people. At the same time she praises the men and women of India They have deep knowledge of the west. She wants to see not only the Taj Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri and the glories of Indian empires but also everything of India. She wants to talk to both groups of the people of cities and villages. She hears their plans of independence. She meets the young intellectuals. She finds them angry After that, she describes the peasants (किसानों) of India. The condition of Indian peasants is very miserable (दुखी). Thus Pearl S. Buck presents the different pictures of India because she saw and understood it very closely.
